‘My enemy’s enemy is my friend.’

There is nothing more debilitating to a smooth-running successful team than when two of the members develop a personal conflict between them.

It gets worse if this escalates to the level where it interferes with their effectiveness and is concerning and disruptive to other team members.

The solution I have found most effective is what I call the ‘greater common enemy’ approach.

When something like this comes up, I make it my business to become a bigger consideration/problem to both of them than they could ever be to each other. They must quickly learn that they will have to work together if they want to stay on the team.

If they don’t learn this pretty quick, I would get rid of both of them – no matter how effective or valuable they think they are because a confident team working together toward common goals is what delivers results.
